Opposition walks out of Rajya Sabha as Home Minister row escalates, Nadda hits back

A fresh political showdown unfolded in Parliament on Thursday after Opposition MPs walked out of the Rajya Sabha, accusing the government of sidestepping questions over the alleged police action against students, while Leader of the House JP Nadda countered that the Opposition had 'no agenda' and was unwilling to participate in meaningful debate.

The confrontation began shortly after the House assembled for the day. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari invoked Article 75 of the Constitution, arguing that the Council of Ministers is collectively responsible to Parliament, and insisted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should be present in the House to respond to the issue.

Chairman Radhakrishnan allowed Tiwari to speak but ruled that his point of order was unrelated to the listed business.

Despite the ruling, Opposition members continued raising slogans demanding the Home Minister's presence, disrupting proceedings.

Amid the protests, several MPs raised public interest issues, including concerns over sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh, drinking water scarcity in Rajasthan's Shekhawati region, a proposed logistics park in Assam, promotion of natural farming and measures to prevent wastage of surplus food prepared by Indian Railways.

Congress MP Rajiv Shukla later remarked that the disorder in the House meant the Opposition's views would not be recorded.

Pramod Tiwari again pressed for Amit Shah's appearance, saying that allegations involving a 'lathi charge and bullets' on students required a direct response from the Home Minister.

When Chairman Radhakrishnan reiterated that the matter did not relate to the day's listed business, Opposition members staged a walkout.

Following their exit, JP Nadda launched a sharp attack on the Opposition, accusing it of repeatedly 'shifting the goalpost' despite the government's willingness to discuss every issue.

He maintained that the government was prepared for debates on all subjects and described the Opposition's conduct as irresponsible.

The Rajya Sabha later continued with its scheduled legislative and parliamentary business, including the tabling of committee reports and statements by ministers on the implementation of recommendations relating to external affairs, science, earth sciences and culture.
