Old Delhi station set for a name change: CM writes to Railway Minister

New Delhi: In a major move to honour a revered historical figure, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has formally requested Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to rename the iconic Old Delhi Railway Station (Delhi Junction) to "Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station." The proposal aims to pay tribute to Maharaja Agrasen, a legendary leader celebrated for his contributions to social justice, peace, economic foresight, and community welfare.
In a letter dated June 19, Chief Minister Gupta underscored the profound impact of Maharaja Agrasen's legacy on India's socio-economic development, particularly within Delhi. She highlighted that his countless followers continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the city's economic and cultural landscape and renaming the station would be a "fitting tribute" that would deeply resonate with millions of Delhi residents.
The Old Delhi Railway Station, established in 1864, holds a substantial place in the city's history as its oldest and one of the busiest railway stations. Its architectural style is inspired by the nearby Red Fort, and it serves as a crucial hub connecting various parts of northern India.
While state governments can recommend such name changes, the final authority for renaming railway stations rests with the Union Ministry of Railways. Sources suggest that a quiet campaign for this renaming has been underway since the ruling party formed the government in the city, with a formal proposal also being moved in the Assembly.
Chief Minister Gupta has sought Minister Vaishnaw's personal intervention for an expeditious and favourable consideration of this proposal, signalling a strong intent to move forward with the renaming.
