Odisha shocker: Man digs up sister’s grave, takes skeleton to bank to withdraw money

Keonjhar (Odisha): In a shocking incident from Odisha’s Keonjhar district, a tribal man allegedly dug up the remains of his dead sister and brought her skeleton to a bank after repeated failed attempts to withdraw money from her account.
The incident took place at the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Patana block.
Police identified the man as Jeetu Munda (50) of Dianali village. He was trying to withdraw Rs 20,000 deposited in the account of his elder sister Kalra Munda (56), who died on January 26, 2026.
Jeetu Munda told reporters, "I have run several times to the bank, and the people there told me to bring the account holder to withdraw money deposited in her name. Though I told them that she had died, they did not listen to me and insisted on bringing her to the bank. Therefore, out of frustration, I dug the grave and brought out her skeleton as proof of her death."
However, Odisha Grameen Bank, in a statement, clarified that viral claims of harassment at its Malliposi branch are misleading. The bank said Jeetu Munda, allegedly intoxicated, demanded a withdrawal from his sister’s account but was refused as per rules. The bank said the account will be settled after submission of a valid death certificate.
Police reached the bank after receiving information about the incident.
Patana Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Kiran Prasad Sahu said, "Jeetu is an illiterate tribal man. He does not know what the legal heir or nominee is. The bank officials have failed to make him understand the procedure to withdraw money from the dead person's account."
Following the incident, police assured Jeetu that they would help facilitate the withdrawal process. The skeleton was later reburied at the graveyard in the presence of police officials.
Local Block Development Officer Manas Dandpat said:
"Today only, I came to know about it. We will see what can be done to resolve the issue."
Sources said the nominee listed in Kalra Munda’s account had also died, leaving Jeetu Munda as the only claimant.
The local administration has reportedly directed bank officials to ensure that Jeetu receives the money as per legal rules at the earliest.
