Not Trisha, but Raghava Lawrence in Trichy East seat vacated by Vijay?

Actor-director Raghava Lawrence has addressed ongoing rumours regarding his potential entry into politics, specifically regarding speculation that he might contest the upcoming by-election for the Trichy East assembly seat. The constituency was recently vacated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.
Taking to X, Lawrence shared a note acknowledging the widespread queries he has received from media professionals and well-wishers seeking clarity on the matter. He explained that because the rumours had grown remarkably, he felt it was necessary to address them directly. He noted that he is currently tied up with the shooting schedule for his upcoming film ‘Benz’, which concludes on June 10. The filmmaker announced that he will host a press conference on June 11 at 9.30 am to share a major update regarding his life.
The importance of Trichy East seat
Chief Minister Joseph Vijay successfully contested from both the Trichy East and Perambur assembly constituencies during the state elections held in April, emerging victorious in both. In Trichy East, Vijay secured a decisive win over DMK's Inigo Irudayaraj by a margin of 27,416 votes. His campaign in the region was a high-profile effort aimed at proving his electoral appeal extended beyond celebrity-dominated urban pockets in Chennai, drawing massive crowds through key local hubs like the Rockfort area and Gandhi Market.
Under statutory electoral rules, an elected representative cannot simultaneously hold two assembly seats. Vijay subsequently chose to retain the Perambur constituency, reportedly due to its closer geographic proximity to the state secretariat, thereby leaving the Trichy East seat vacant and triggering an upcoming by-election.
