Patna: Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, formally joined the Janata Dal (United) on Sunday. His entry into the party comes shortly after the JD(U) chief filed his nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah.

Nishant, an engineering graduate in his 40s, has largely remained away from active politics despite being the son of one of Bihar’s most influential leaders. On the rare occasions he has appeared in public, he has earned goodwill for his humility and simple public interactions.

During brief conversations with the media in the past, he has also indicated that he closely follows the political and development work undertaken by his father.

Speculation grows over deputy chief minister role

Nishant Kumar’s entry into the JD(U) has fuelled speculation that he may soon be given a key role in the state government. Reports citing a close aide of Nitish Kumar suggested that a “unanimous” decision had been taken to appoint Nishant as deputy chief minister in the government expected to be formed after Nitish steps down.

However, no official confirmation has yet been issued by the party leadership regarding such an appointment.

Nitish Kumar prepares for Rajya Sabha move

Nitish Kumar, who has served as Bihar’s longest-serving chief minister, recently announced his intention to enter the Rajya Sabha.

In a message posted on X, the 75-year-old leader said he had decided to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election and assured party workers that he would continue to guide the state’s development.

“I seek to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the elections being held this time. I want to assure you with complete honesty that my relationship with you will continue in the future as well, and my resolve to work together with you to build a developed Bihar will remain steadfast,” he wrote.

He also said that the new government to be formed in the state would have his full cooperation and guidance.

Leadership transition in Bihar politics

Nitish Kumar’s decision to step down from the chief minister’s post has triggered intense speculation about his successor and the future leadership structure in Bihar.

Although discussions about his declining health had circulated earlier, the sudden announcement still surprised many observers who had expected a more gradual transition plan.

In the coming days, Nitish Kumar is expected to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, after which he is likely to formally resign as chief minister.

Possible shift in Bihar’s political landscape

The development could mark a significant shift in Bihar’s political landscape. Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav have dominated the state’s politics for more than three decades, both emerging from the socialist political tradition shaped by Jayaprakash Narayan.

With Nitish preparing to step aside, analysts say the move could potentially pave the way for new leadership in the state and may even open the possibility of Bihar seeing its first Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister.

The transition also places the future of the JD(U) in a period of uncertainty, as the party prepares to navigate a new phase without Nitish Kumar in the chief minister’s role.
