National Lok Adalat: Why it’s best chance to reduce penalties on traffic fines and challans

Millions of vehicle owners across India will get relief from their pending traffic fines and challans during the National Lok Adalat 2025, scheduled for September 13. This legal initiative, held across the country, is a practical way to resolve minor violations without long court delays. It not only saves time and money for citizens but also reduces the massive backlog in the courts.
Lok Adalats held quarterly across India
National Lok Adalats are organised four times a year, on a single day across all courts — from the Supreme Court of India down to Taluk Courts. They handle both pre-litigation and post-litigation cases. The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) releases an annual calendar for these sessions. In 2025, the last Lok Adalat is scheduled for December 13, making the September sitting a key opportunity for motorists to clear challans without delay.
Which challans are eligible for settlement?
The September Lok Adalat covers common traffic fines, including:
Riding without a helmet or seat belt
Over-speeding or jumping a red light
Wrong parking or driving in the wrong lane
Not carrying a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
Driving without a licence or vehicle fitness certificate
Driving without a number plate
Wrongly issued challans
These challans can be reduced or waived entirely, depending on the case.
Offences that remain outside its scope
More serious violations are excluded, such as drunk driving, hit-and-run cases, negligent driving causing death, underage driving, unauthorized racing, vehicles used in crime, challans tied to ongoing court cases, or those issued in another state.
How to take part in Lok Adalat 2025
To settle traffic challans, citizens must register online through the NALSA website. A token number and appointment letter will be issued, mentioning the date and time. On the hearing day, applicants must carry these documents along with challan details and vehicle papers, ideally arriving an hour before the slot. Some locations will also have walk-in benches for direct settlement.
Beyond traffic fines
Alongside traffic violations, the Adalat also hears civil disputes such as family issues, property disagreements, and other minor pending cases. Judges encourage settlement and close cases with final orders.
Why this is the best time
For motorists, the September 13 Lok Adalat is a golden chance to wipe the slate clean and avoid future legal complications. For the courts, it means fewer pending cases. And for society, it encourages safer driving habits and quicker justice delivery.
