It’s official: Nainar Nagendran is new BJP chief of Tamil Nadu — know what saffron party eyes

Nainar Nagendran was officially declared the new Tamil Nadu BJP president on Saturday, in a move aimed at improving ties with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. His appointment, finalised during a party meeting in Chennai, is intended to restore trust and improve relations between the BJP and the AIADMK, two parties that had parted ways following a public rift under the leadership of outgoing BJP president K Annamalai.

Nagendran’s elevation marks a tactical shift. His background, regional affiliation, and political trajectory make him a suitable bridge between the two parties. By choosing someone with an AIADMK past, the BJP hopes to consolidate the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu, which is vital in its fight against the ruling DMK.

Why is Nagendran a better fit than Annamalai?
Unlike Annamalai, who clashed with AIADMK leaders, including a controversial remark about late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Nagendran shares historical ties with the AIADMK and has avoided public friction. His political roots lie with the AIADMK, where he served as a cabinet minister under Jayalalithaa from 2001 to 2006 and held portfolios such as Transport, Industries, and Electricity.

Annamalai and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami belong to the same Gounder community and western Tamil Nadu, a factor that contributed to tensions. In contrast, Nagendran hails from Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu and belongs to the Thevar community, offering a different regional and caste equation that could help ease AIADMK’s discomfort.

Annamalai’s leadership was cited by AIADMK as a key reason for withdrawing from the NDA alliance in 2023. Following back-to-back electoral losses in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, pressure mounted on the BJP to make amends, especially after senior leaders from both parties met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Annamalai later stepped back from the race for the state president post.

How does Nagendran strengthen the alliance?
Nagendran’s AIADMK background is central to the BJP’s efforts to revive a working coalition. Having contested as an AIADMK candidate in 2001 and 2011 from Tirunelveli, and later joining the BJP in 2017, he is seen as someone familiar with the AIADMK’s internal culture. He has publicly emphasised dialogue and mutual respect in managing alliance politics, in contrast to Annamalai’s confrontational stance.

His appointment comes shortly after Shah’s visit to Tamil Nadu and a series of meetings between top BJP and AIADMK leaders. Notably, the AIADMK had made it clear that any alliance would only be possible without Annamalai at the helm of BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit.

What does his political record say?
At 64, Nagendran brings decades of experience. He has served three terms as an MLA from Tirunelveli — winning in 2001, 2011 (under AIADMK), and 2021 (as BJP candidate). Though he lost the Assembly polls in 2006 and 2016, and two Lok Sabha bids in 2019 and 2024, his consistent presence in Tamil Nadu politics has kept him in public view. He has held leadership roles within the BJP, including as State vice-president and Legislature Party Leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

His nomination as state president was backed by several senior party figures, including Annamalai himself, signalling consensus within BJP ranks.

What’s next for the BJP-AIADMK alliance?
The BJP and AIADMK have announced that the NDA will contest under the leadership of Narendra Modi nationally and Edappadi K Palaniswami in the state. With the AIADMK declaring the DMK its only adversary and the BJP affirming non-interference in AIADMK’s internal affairs, both parties are seeking stability in their renewed partnership.

Nagendran, having shared the stage with Modi during the Pamban Bridge inauguration in Rameswaram, has already been presented as a visible face of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu push. His leadership is expected to usher in a more collaborative tone as the alliance prepares to take on the DMK in 2026.
