Crude oil tanker catches fire on Mumbai-Pune Expressway after brake failure | VIDEO

Mumbai: A crude oil tanker caught fire near Khalapur on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday after an alleged failure of its braking system, triggering an emergency response, authorities said.

The tanker was travelling from Pune towards Mumbai when the driver reportedly experienced a mechanical problem with the brakes. The vehicle subsequently went out of control, overturned and caught fire.

The driver was briefly trapped inside the overturned cabin but was rescued safely. He did not suffer any serious injuries, according to authorities.

Following emergency calls, personnel from the Khopoli Municipal Fire Brigade rushed to the spot with fire tenders and began efforts to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters successfully extinguished the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further along the busy expressway.

Further details about the incident, including the extent of damage to the tanker, are awaited.

Two killed in Mumbai building fire

The incident comes days after a deadly fire broke out on the 11th floor of a ground-plus-12-storey building on Church Road in Mumbai's Vile Parle (West) on August 12.

The blaze was reported at around 10.02pm at Shanta Bhavan Building, near St Xavier's School. It spread through electrical wiring and installations, an air-conditioning unit and household items, including a sofa, bed, false ceiling and kitchen utensils, covering an area of around 4,000 square feet.

Eight fire tenders were deployed to the scene, while 15 people were rescued from the building's terrace, Fire Officer V Bhosale said.

Two people, including a woman and a child, died in the fire, while eight others were injured. Two of the injured were hospitalised.

The fire was brought under control, and authorities said its exact cause would be established following a detailed investigation.
