‘Mullaperiyar dam fully stable,’ Tamil Nadu rebuts Kerala's claims at Southern Zonal Council

Chengalpattu: Tamil Nadu Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar has strongly countered the Kerala government’s safety concerns regarding the Mullaperiyar Dam, asserting that the structure remains completely stable and that Tamil Nadu continues to strictly abide by Supreme Court directives.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Kovalam, the Minister addressed the ongoing friction between the two neighbouring states over the reservoir.

“What Keralam is saying is not correct on Mullaperiyar Dam, and we need to obey what the Supreme Court is saying. The dam has full stability,” he stated.

During the high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Minister also addressed the Cauvery water dispute, noting that it remains sub judice before the Supreme Court and therefore cannot be deliberated in alternative political or regional forums. He expressed overall satisfaction with the proceedings, stating that Tamil Nadu successfully presented its key demands to the Union government.

The Southern Zonal Council comprises Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Keralam, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and the Union Territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay serves as Vice-Chairman, alongside attending Chief Ministers including D K Shivakumar, Chandrababu Naidu, V D Satheesan and Revanth Reddy.
