Washington DC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday evening (4:00 pm US Eastern Time), which will be early Friday morning (1:30 am IST) in India. This marks their first official bilateral meeting since the new US administration took office, focusing on strengthening Indo-US relations in trade, immigration, defense, and regional security, including the Middle East.
The meeting comes amid speculation over India’s absence from the guest list at President Trump’s inauguration on January 20. However, both leaders are expected to take a forward-looking approach, emphasising collaboration on key global and regional issues.

- Trade and tariffs – Prime Minister Modi is expected to advocate for reducing tariffs and expanding trade opportunities, while President Trump emphasized increasing U.S. defense and energy exports to India.
- Immigration and H-1B visa concerns – The leaders' discussion will see visa policy reforms, addressing issues affecting Indian professionals working in the US, a critical concern for India’s IT sector.
- Defense and regional security – Strengthening intelligence-sharing and military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region was a major focus, aligning with both nations’ strategic interests.

Modi’s US visit, engagements
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Washington DC, on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning IST) and was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora at Blair House, the official residence for White House guests. Supporters gathered outside, chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Modi Ji.”
Ahead of his White House meeting, Modi engaged with key US officials and business leaders, discussing economic collaboration and strategic partnerships. He also met with US National Intelligence Director and prominent Indian-American leaders to explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
Following the high-profile summit, Prime Minister Modi is set to meet leading Indian industrialists before concluding his US visit and returning to India.
