Hyderabad: A New Delhi-to-Chennai IndiGo flight was forced to execute an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad of Hyderabad on Sunday after a passenger's personal electronic device began emitting smoke inside the cabin.

Flight 6E 6115, operating on its scheduled October 11 route, landed safely following quick intervention by onboard crew members and pilots who followed standard aviation safety protocols.

According to passengers onboard, the fire broke out from a portable power bank stored in a cabin compartment, causing smoke to spread and inducing brief panic among travelers. Cabin staff deployed onboard fire-fighting procedures to extinguish the source before pilots requested immediate air traffic clearance to divert to the nearest suitable airfield in Hyderabad.

An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the situation was neutralised in flight prior to touch-down, adding that an alternate aircraft was deployed to transport all affected passengers from Hyderabad onward to Chennai.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates,” the airline statement noted, emphasising that safety remains its top priority.

Further technical assessments regarding the battery failure and exact timeline details for the onward journey remain pending.
