Sejal Pawar viral video: KEM Hospital launches probe into cadaver remarks row

Mumbai: Mumbai’s civic-run KEM Hospital has constituted a two-member committee to investigate controversial remarks made by an undergraduate MBBS student during a stand-up comedy show, triggering widespread outrage and disciplinary scrutiny.
The student, Sejal Pawar, allegedly made derogatory comments about male cadavers during a performance by comedian Pranit More in Gurugram. The clip, which circulated widely on social media, also drew criticism from medical authorities for being insensitive to body donation and medical ethics.

KEM Hospital Dean Dr Harish M Pathak said the remarks were “highly unacceptable”, stressing that the institution treats body donors with utmost respect. He added that the inquiry committee would submit its report within a few days, following which appropriate action would be taken.
The panel comprises Dr Anita Chalak, Warden of the Undergraduate Hostel and Head of the Biochemistry Department, and Dr Shraddha More, Assistant Professor of Medicine. The inquiry will also consider relevant National Medical Commission guidelines on social media conduct.
Authorities said the hospital took cognisance of the viral video and initiated action after the comments sparked public backlash. The Maharashtra Cyber police has also registered a case against Pranit More, web developer Himanshu Jangra and others for allegedly circulating obscene and objectionable content.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) clarified that Pawar is an undergraduate student and not a member of the association. While condemning the remarks, MARD said the response must remain proportionate, warning against online harassment and unrelated personal attacks.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also condemned the incident, stating that vulgar or hateful remarks in the name of entertainment would not be tolerated. She said freedom of expression cannot be used to justify content that is derogatory or insensitive, and urged creators to act responsibly.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar also visited KEM Hospital and demanded strict action against the student, including suspension and police action, while calling for the video to be taken down from social media platforms.
