Man admitted for treatment dies at Delhi govt hospital after ceiling fan falls in emergency ward

A 42-year-old man has died in East Delhi following a disturbing incident in which a ceiling fan reportedly detached and fell on him inside a government hospital.

The patient, identified as Md Akbar, was being treated in the emergency ward of Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital when the equipment came loose on Saturday night.

Akbar had been admitted just hours earlier with severe pneumonia and high blood pressure. While a nursing officer was attending to him around 9:30 pm, the fan allegedly struck both the patient and the medic.

Hospital records indicate that Akbar passed away roughly three hours later. While his death certificate attributes the loss of life to his pre-existing medical conditions, the timing of the structural failure has raised serious questions about patient safety.

A facility under strain

This incident is not the first time the hospital's infrastructure has come under scrutiny. Only last month, a portion of the ceiling inside the emergency operation theatre complex reportedly collapsed.

Although no one was injured in the previous incident, medical staff have been raising concerns about the deteriorating condition of the building for some time.

The hospital was completed in 1991 and serves as a critical lifeline for the trans-Yamuna area.
