Mamata loyalist Kunal Ghosh’s car attacked in Hooghly, eggs and stones hurled | Video
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Kunal Ghosh faced a protest in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday when a group of people allegedly hurled eggs and stones at his car while he was travelling to Serampore.
Ghosh was reportedly on his way to attend a rally involving former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee when the incident took place.
A video circulating online shows a crowd surrounding the vehicle, with objects being thrown at it. The rear windshield of the car was also allegedly damaged in the incident.
Ghosh later drove to Bhabani Bhawan, the state police headquarters in Alipore, where he alleged that he was not allowed to enter the premises.
'I wanted to talk to a police officer and show the condition of my car. I could not get police help,' Ghosh said, according to reports.
The TMC MLA also questioned what he described as a lack of courtesy towards a sitting MLA and subsequently lodged a complaint at Alipore Police Station.
The incident triggered a political exchange between the TMC and BJP. TMC leaders alleged that the attack was the 'handiwork of the BJP'.
Party leader Asit Majumdar described it as a 'pre-planned attack by the BJP' and said it was not a protest by ordinary people.
The BJP rejected the allegation. Uttarpara BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty described the incident as a 'spontaneous response from the public'.
The allegations made by both sides could not be independently verified immediately.
