In response to the first reported case of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) infection in Bengaluru, the Maharashtra, Telangana, and Delhi state governments have issued advisories to prevent the spread of the virus.

The advisories urge hospitals to isolate suspected HMPV cases to curb any possible spread of the infection. These measures aim to ensure swift action and safeguard public health. The advisories were released following a meeting convened by Dr Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services, with chief district medical officers and the state programme officer of IDSP on Sunday.

Hospitals have been directed to report cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) via the IHIP Portal. The advisory also emphasises the need for medical staff to enforce stringent isolation measures, maintain thorough documentation, closely monitor patients, and provide appropriate treatment.

The infection was detected in an eight-month-old child with no recent travel history, as confirmed by the state health department. The Karnataka government has alerted the Union Health Ministry, while other states have taken precautionary measures to safeguard public health.
