Stone-pelting in MP: At least 15 held after temple loudspeaker dispute leads to violence in Jabalpur

Authorities have saturated the Sihora area of Jabalpur district, MP, with a heavy police presence following a violent communal clash sparked by a dispute over loudspeaker volumes during religious services. The confrontation occurred Wednesday evening in the Azad Chowk neighbourhood, a historically sensitive locality where a Durga temple and a mosque sit directly opposite one another.
The incident
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, tensions ignited during the evening Aarti prayer at the temple. The initial dispute began regarding the volume of the temple’s loudspeakers, which quickly escalated when witnesses reported a youth attempting to climb and damage the temple’s exterior grill. This act served as a catalyst for a larger confrontation as large groups from both communities gathered, resulting in a chaotic exchange of stone-pelting. Some rioters reportedly took to the streets armed with sticks, causing widespread panic and significant property damage throughout the district.
Official response and arrests
Senior administrative and law enforcement officials, including the Jabalpur Collector, Superintendent of Police, and the Inspector General of the Jabalpur Range, arrived on the scene to establish a security perimeter and restore order. Police have since identified more than two dozen agitators involved in the riot, and at least 15 individuals have been taken into custody. Several vehicles used during the unrest have also been seized as evidence. While the situation is currently described by officials as being under control, additional police companies remain stationed at sensitive checkpoints to prevent further flare-ups.
Regional sensitivity
The clash comes during a high-tension period as the region enters the month of Ramadan. Local officials noted that the proximity of the two religious sites in Azad Chowk has necessitated heightened surveillance in the past, a measure that has now been intensified following the violence on Wednesday. The Jabalpur district administration continues to monitor the area closely to ensure the safety of all residents during the ongoing religious season.
