New Delhi: The cost of domestic and commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rose sharply on Saturday as Indian oil marketing companies adjusted for the global energy volatility triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

The price of a non-subsidised 14.2-kg domestic cylinder was hiked by ₹60, while the 19-kg commercial cylinder used by businesses saw a steep increase of ₹114.50. According to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) website, the revised rates became effective March 7.

Impact on Domestic Consumers

In the national capital, a domestic cylinder now costs ₹913, up from ₹853. This marks only the second price revision for household consumers in nearly a year, following a ₹50 increase in April 2025. Industry officials noted that despite the hike, India’s cooking gas prices remain among the lowest in the region when compared to neighbouring nations.

The new domestic rates across major metros are as follows:

  • Mumbai: ₹912.50
  • Kolkata: ₹939
  • Chennai: ₹928.50

Commercial and Industrial Strain

The variation in pricing across different states is attributed to local value-added tax (VAT) and various state-level levies.

More than 10 crore beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will be shielded from the full impact of the hike. The government confirmed that these low-income households will continue to receive a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to 12 refills annually.

Commercial establishments, including hotels and restaurants, face a more significant financial burden. The ₹114.50 increase brings the price of a commercial cylinder in Delhi to ₹1,883. This follows a smaller ₹28 hike implemented on March 1, bringing the total increase for commercial gas to ₹302.50 since the start of the year.

City Domestic (14.2 kg) Commercial (19 kg)
Delhi ₹913.00 ₹1,883.00
Kolkata ₹939.00 ₹1,995.50
Mumbai ₹912.50 ₹1,835.50
Chennai ₹928.50 ₹2,045.00

The Global Context

The price surge comes as the "Operation Epic Fury" campaign in the Middle East continues to disrupt global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the crisis, the government has directed domestic refineries to maximise LPG production and has begun receiving imports from the United States under a new one-year contract to ensure national energy security.
