LPG biometrics: Centre makes e-KYC mandatory as supply concerns mount amid West Asia tensions

New Delhi: Amid rising supply shortage and apprehensions over LPG availability due to the ongoing West Asia conflict, the Centre has issued a fresh directive making Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (e-KYC) mandatory for all 330 million domestic LPG consumers. To prevent overcrowding at gas agencies during this period of high demand, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has enabled a digital ‘Face-Recognition’ feature for verification from home.
Essential guidelines for consumers
- Mandatory verification: Every domestic connection (including PMUY) now requires an annual biometric check-in.
- Subsidy safety net: For Ujjwala (PMUY) beneficiaries, the ₹300 subsidy on the 8th and 9th refills will be held in abeyance and only released once the e-KYC is verified.
- Supply status: The Ministry confirms that cylinder supply will not be disconnected due to pending KYC; however, the government is prioritising verified households to manage current stock levels.
- Digital deadline: Consumers are encouraged to complete the process before the new financial year begins on April 1.
How to verify using your smartphone
This method is free, secure and eliminates the need for physical visits:
- Required apps: Download your Oil Marketing Company’s app (IndianOil ONE, HP PAY or Hello BPCL) and the official ‘Aadhaar FaceRD’ app.
- Access account: Log in using your registered mobile number.
- Initiate scan: Select the e-KYC option and follow the prompts. The system uses your phone's camera for a secure face-match against Aadhaar records.
- Instant update: Once confirmed, your verification status is updated automatically in the central database.
Pro tip: If you're having trouble with the app, you can ask your delivery executive to perform the biometric scan via their device during your next delivery.
