Let go of arrogance, speak Kannada: Mohandas Pai's appeal to Bengaluru professionals | WATCH

Tech investor and ex-Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai has urged professionals in Bengaluru to "let go of arrogance" and make an effort to speak Kannada, amid growing tensions over language in the city. Pai's comments come as some residents express frustration over migrants' reluctance to learn and communicate in Kannada, sparking debates about cultural integration and respect for the local language.
Bengaluru's cosmopolitan nature has led to a diverse population with varying languages spoken. Pai has emphasised the importance of professionals learning Kannada to show respect for the local community and culture.
Pai in an interview with PTI, said, "Bengaluru is one of the most inclusive cities in India. The native Kannada-speaking population here is around 33%. People from across the country have made the city their home, have prospered here, and continue to do well. But some of them, instead of integrating, develop a sense of superiority and outright reject the local language. That’s not acceptable.”
His comments have sparked a conversation about language and cultural sensitivity in Bengaluru, highlighting the role of language in shaping community relations. "Whether someone moves to Bengal, Maharashtra or Karnataka, it helps to learn a few words of the local language. It’s not just about communication—it’s about respecting the culture of the place you’ve chosen to live in,” Pai said.
He cited a recent incident involving a State Bank of India (SBI) manager in Karnataka, who was accused of refusing to converse in Kannada with a customer. Referring to the episode, Pai said, “This entire episode could have been avoided with just a little humility.” He added, “All she needed to say was, ‘I can’t speak the language, I’m still learning, let me ask a colleague to help’”.
The incident drew criticism from pro-Kannada groups and prompted an official apology from the bank.
