Leander Paes switches sides again, joins BJP ahead of high-stakes Bengal polls

In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Indian tennis legend Leander Paes joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in New Delhi.
Paes was formally inducted into the party in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, where he accepted the BJP flag, signalling his entry into the party ahead of the high-stakes Bengal polls.
The move marks a notable political shift for the former tennis star. Paes had earlier joined the All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the Goa Assembly elections, aligning with the party’s expansion efforts outside West Bengal at the time.
His switch to the BJP now comes just months before the crucial Bengal electoral battle. One of India’s most decorated athletes, Paes brings with him nationwide recognition and strong public appeal.
The BJP is expected to leverage the icon’s popularity, particularly among youth and urban voters, as it looks to strengthen its position in West Bengal.
While Paes has long been associated with sports and social initiatives, this marks his latest foray into active politics and a significant realignment in his political journey. His induction adds a prominent face to the BJP’s campaign as the contest for West Bengal intensifies.
