The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has shared a video purportedly showing former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, party MP Derek O’Brien and Mala Roy being taken away in a police vehicle from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where they were participating in a protest.

The footage, posted by the party on social media, shows the three leaders being taken away from the protest site.

The development comes amid a major protest in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Banerjee and other opposition leaders have raised concerns about electoral processes and demanded accountability from the Election Commission.

The demonstration at Jantar Mantar forms part of the wider political mobilisation surrounding these issues.

Earlier, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh had posted on X that ‘Didi’, referring to Mamata Banerjee, had been arrested by police. The party’s video subsequently showed Banerjee, O’Brien and Roy being taken away in a police vehicle.

Later, he posted another photo saying: ‘Keep your mouth shut. Didi in protest against the murder of democracy in Delhi. Then the police arrest her and the MPs and take them away.’

The video shows the leaders being taken away from the protest site, though the legal basis for the police action and the circumstances of their removal were not immediately clear.

The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened security arrangements in Delhi on Saturday, October 10, as protesters and political leaders assembled around the planned demonstration.

Security restrictions and detentions have been reported in connection with the protest against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Further details about the police action involving the three TMC leaders, including whether they were formally arrested or detained, are awaited.
