KCR suspends daughter Kavitha from BRS over Kaleshwaram scam charges

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president and former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) on Tuesday, has suspended his daughter, MLC K Kavitha, from the party.

This comes after Kavitha publicly accused senior party colleagues Finance Minister T Harish Rao and BRS MP J Santosh Kumar, of involvement in the Kaleshwaram project scam.

"The party leadership is taking this matter seriously as the recent behaviour and ongoing anti-party activities of party MLC K Kavitha are damaging the BRS party. Party president K Chandrasekhar Rao has taken a decision to suspend K. Kavitha from the party with immediate effect," the BRS said in a statement.

What did Kavitha allegedly say?

At a recent press conference, Kavitha directly named T Harish Rao and J Santosh Kumar, alleging that they colluded with contractors to siphon assets during the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. She claimed they had stained her father’s reputation and prompted the CBI inquiry into the project.

“Does Harish Rao, who served as irrigation minister for five years, not have a major role in this?” she said. She added that while KCR was working for the people, these leaders acted in their self-interest.

Kavitha asserted that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy was “protecting” the accused, alleging they were “hand-in-glove” to target KCR’s image.

What has been the internal response?

K Kavitha’s remarks have triggered internal alarm. BRS working president K T Rama Rao (KTR), her brother, strongly supported Harish Rao, praising his “master class” legislative performance.

Meanwhile, Kavitha’s press team was swiftly removed from party media communication circles, signalling deepening tensions.

Why has she been suspended?

According to party sources, Kavitha’s allegations have seriously disrupted internal unity. The leadership is now seen distancing from her.

Her public criticism of high-ranking leaders and the fallout from the dispute with Harish Rao and Santosh Kumar have prompted the party to take disciplinary action.

Who is K Kavitha?

Kalvakuntla Kavitha, born in 1978, is an MLC from Nizamabad and former Lok Sabha MP. The daughter of KCR, she has been active in Telangana politics and social causes, notably through her organisation Telangana Jagruthi.

In 2024, she was arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor (excise) policy case but was later released on bail.
