Chennai: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay boarded a chartered flight from Chennai to New Delhi on Monday to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the probe into the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives during a party campaign event last year.

Vijay is expected to visit the CBI headquarters later in the day after the agency issued him a notice under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), directing him to present himself for examination. The summons, dated January 6, was served earlier this month.

The investigation relates to the stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK campaign programme in Karur district, which left 41 people dead and several others injured, triggering widespread public outrage.

The Supreme Court had earlier transferred the case to the CBI, which has since questioned multiple senior TVK functionaries in New Delhi. Party leaders have also submitted video footage to investigators, alleging lapses on the part of the Tamil Nadu government.

As part of the probe, the CBI has examined the campaign vehicle used by Vijay at the event and has already questioned its driver.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the decision to order a CBI probe. The State argued that Vijay and his party, being accused in the case, cannot choose the investigating agency or monitoring committee.
