Karnataka medical hostel raids: Food safety notices served to canteens over expired goods

Bengaluru: Food safety authorities have served notices to canteens and kitchens operating across five medical college hostels in Karnataka after uncovering several infractions during inspections, including expired food products and labelling non-compliance, officials said Saturday.

The action follows widespread inspections conducted on 27 August, during which a total of 34 canteens and kitchens in government and private medical college hostels were examined, according to officials.

The health department stated that notices were served to five of these facilities in response to specific shortcomings identified during the visits.

Inspectors detected labelling violations at one canteen, whilst seizing seven kilograms of expired rava (semolina) and eight litres of stored milk from the kitchen premises, the department noted in a statement.

"In connection with the violations, necessary legal action is being taken against the concerned food business operator by registering a case under the applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and Rules," the statement said.

The operator will be produced before the competent authority, the Additional District Magistrate serving as the Adjudicating Officer, for further legal proceedings, officials added.
