Bengal poll violence: BJP workers beaten in Kalyani, party gheraos police station, 1 detained

Nadia: Political tensions escalated sharply in Kalyani just days before the second phase of polling on April 29, after BJP workers alleged they were brutally attacked by miscreants linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The incident has triggered protests, a heavy security deployment, and renewed concerns over law and order in the run-up to voting. Watch the video below:

According to BJP sources, at least three party workers were injured in the alleged attack, which took place on Friday night in the Shahidpally area.

Party leaders claimed that a group of attackers suddenly descended on BJP workers who were gathered at a local field, leading to severe physical assault.

Following the incident, BJP workers and supporters staged a protest outside Kalyani police station, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.

The BJP candidate from the Kalyani Assembly constituency, Anupam Biswas, was present at the protest and led demonstrations, with supporters raising slogans against the police over alleged inaction.

Police and central forces were deployed in large numbers to control the situation and prevent further escalation.

Officials confirmed that one person has been detained in connection with the incident, and an investigation is currently underway.

The BJP has alleged that the attack was politically motivated and carried out to intimidate its cadre ahead of the crucial second phase of elections.

Injured workers claimed that the attackers entered their homes and assaulted them. They further alleged that several of the assailants were outsiders and not known to them.

According to the BJP's claims, two of their workers are still untraceable following the incident. The TMC has strongly denied all allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

Party leaders claimed that the incident was the result of internal conflict within the BJP rather than any targeted attack.

According to local TMC leadership, a group of BJP workers had allegedly been consuming alcohol and later got into a fight among themselves, which escalated into violence.

Kalyani block TMC president Pankaj Kumar Singh stated that the exact sequence of events needs to be verified, suggesting that the clash may not have been politically driven.

The incident has significantly heightened political tensions in Nadia district ahead of polling.

With just days remaining before the second phase of voting on April 29, concerns are growing over whether the administration will be able to ensure a peaceful and violence-free electoral process in the constituency.
