No soil beneath the track: Over 400 passengers evacuated after hill slip on Kalka-Shimla route

New Delhi: More than 400 passengers and railway staff were evacuated to Kalka after a hill slip disrupted train operations on the Kalka-Shimla route and exposed part of a connecting bridge, Northern Railway said on Sunday.

The incident occurred late Saturday night after incessant rain caused a section of the track between Koti and Ghumman stations to slip.

"Following a hill slip yesterday at Bridge No. 57 between the Koti and Ghumman stations on the Shimla-Kalka UNESCO World Heritage section, Northern Railway officials executed a prompt and seamless rescue operation, ensuring zero inconvenience to travellers," a Railways press note said.

A total of 391 passengers and 40 train crew members were evacuated following the disruption. Four incoming trains were also short-terminated as a precaution.

According to Northern Railway, the stranded passengers and crew were transported in five buses, and two Tempo Travellers arranged from Solan, Koti and Dharampur.

Local passengers were subsequently sent onward to their destinations, while around 120 passengers were accommodated on Train No. 13052, which was specially rescheduled to depart at 1.30 am.

"Due to the quick action, efficient transhipment, and empathetic care provided by Northern Railway staff, the entire operation was conducted smoothly without a single passenger complaint or refund request registered at Kalka station," it said.
