Jyot Singh becomes first Sikh and Indian-American elected to Georgia Assembly

New York: Jyot Singh has been elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, becoming the first Sikh and Indian-American to serve in the state's General Assembly.
Singh, a Yale University alumnus and Democrat, won Georgia House District 97 in the November 3 US midterm elections.
"We made history for our community here in House District 97," Singh said in a video posted on X following his victory.
In his vision statement ahead of the election, Singh highlighted the diversity of Gwinnett County, where he grew up in Norcross, Georgia. He described it as a strength of the community but pointed to challenges faced by families, particularly in accessing healthcare and affordable housing.
"Our diversity isn't just a number – it's our strength," he said, adding that every section of the community should have the opportunity to thrive.
Singh secured 13,820 votes, accounting for 68 per cent of the total, defeating his Republican rival Yassin Moghazy, who received 6,509 votes (32 per cent).
He had earlier won the Democratic primary for Georgia House District 97 in May, defeating Jacques Laurent.
