JioStar secures ‘dynamic+’ injunction from Delhi HC against illegal streaming of India tour of England 2025

New Delhi: In a major move to combat online piracy, the Delhi High Court has granted a "dynamic+" injunction in favour of JioStar India Private Limited to prevent the illegal and unauthorized streaming of the highly anticipated India Tour of England 2025. Justice Saurabh Banerjee issued the injunction, aiming to safeguard JioStar's exclusive digital streaming rights for the cricket series.
The order specifically targets four identified "rogue websites," prohibiting them from streaming or making available any part of the India Tour of England 2025 matches without proper authorization. Furthermore, the court directed the immediate suspension and blocking of these websites.
The "dynamic+" nature of the injunction is crucial for its effectiveness. It empowers JioStar to swiftly notify concerned Domain Name Registrars (DNRs) or Internet Service Providers (ISPs) about any new mirror, redirect, or alphanumeric variations of these rogue websites that may emerge during the tour. This mechanism allows for prompt blocking of new infringing sites, providing ongoing protection against evolving piracy tactics.
JioStar, through an arrangement with Sony, holds the exclusive digital streaming rights for the India Tour of England 2025 on its OTT platform, JioHotstar. The company initiated the lawsuit out of concern that these rogue websites, which had a history of illegally streaming other major sporting events like the Indian Premier League 2025, would continue to cause irreparable financial damage by broadcasting the upcoming tour without authorization.
The Delhi High Court recognized this as a clear case of copyright infringement, noting the systematic and intentional nature of the violations, including the use of URL redirection and identity masking by the infringing websites.
