Jantar Mantar no longer a protest site: Delhi Police names 3 alternatives

New Delhi: Jantar Mantar has been de-notified as a designated protest venue in the national capital, with Delhi Police naming three alternative sites for demonstrations amid ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The new designated venues are Ramlila Ground in Central Delhi, Burari Ground in North Delhi and CBD Ground in East Delhi. The decision follows recommendations from a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to identify alternative locations where citizens can exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations.
In a notice issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the police said detailed and revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for organising demonstrations at the three venues would be issued separately.
The order partially modifies an earlier standing order dated April 28, 2022.

Jantar Mantar replaced by 3 new protest sites in Delhi
The three venues designated for protests and demonstrations are:
- Ramlila Ground: Central Delhi
- Burari Ground: North Delhi
- CBD Ground: East Delhi
Delhi Police said the change was based on the recommendations of the committee set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs to examine suitable alternatives to the existing designated protest site.
The revised SOPs are expected to lay out the procedures governing demonstrations at the newly designated venues.
Why has Jantar Mantar been de-notified?
Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, had constituted a Committee to examine alternative proper venues for citizen's right for organizing protest/demonstrations in place of the existing "designated site".

The decision comes amid protests in the national capital demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties, student organisations and civil society groups have mobilised around the issue, with demonstrations involving the Congress, other INDIA bloc parties, the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
Jantar Mantar has been a focal point of these demonstrations, including protests led by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke.
The venue has also hosted protests over alleged examination irregularities in recent months. The de-notification means Jantar Mantar will no longer be a designated site for protests under the revised arrangement.
