Counting of votes concluded in Assam’s Jalukbari Assembly constituency on May 4, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the seat by a margin of 89,434 votes, securing his sixth consecutive term.

The Jalukbari election result was among the most closely watched in Assam, given Sarma’s position as the incumbent chief minister and his long-standing association with the constituency. Early trends during counting had already indicated a comfortable lead for the BJP leader, which was sustained through the final rounds.

Jalukbari, situated in the Kamrup Metro district and part of the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency, has remained a key political stronghold for Sarma. His continued success from the seat underscores his sustained influence in the region’s electoral landscape.

Sarma has now won Jalukbari six times in a row. He first secured the seat as a Congress candidate, winning three consecutive terms before joining the BJP, under which he has added three more victories, including the latest win in the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

The result further consolidates the BJP’s position in the state, with Jalukbari continuing to be one of its safest constituencies.

Key candidates in Jalukbari Election 2026

The main contest in Jalukbari this time features Himanta Biswa Sarma from the BJP, Bidisha Neog representing the Congress, and independent candidate Dipika Das. The outcome is significant given Sarma’s leadership role and the BJP’s broader electoral ambitions in Assam.

Past Election results and vote share trends

In the 2021 Assembly election, Jalukbari recorded an 82 percent voter turnout. Sarma won decisively, defeating Congress candidate Romen Chandra Borthakur by a margin of around 60 percent. In 2016, voter turnout stood at 85 percent, with Sarma securing victory over Congress candidate Niren Deka by a margin of 56 percent.

High voter participation has remained a consistent feature in Jalukbari and across Assam. In the current election cycle, overall voter turnout in the state reached 85.38 percent, reflecting strong electoral engagement.

Exit Poll Predictions for Assam Election 2026

At the state level, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is aiming for a third consecutive term in Assam. The alliance currently holds a dominant position in the state’s political landscape.

Exit polls suggest an advantage for the BJP-led NDA. Axis My India has projected 88 to 100 seats for the alliance, while the Congress-led opposition is expected to win between 24 and 36 seats. Another survey by JVC estimates 88 to 101 seats for the NDA and 23 to 33 for Congress, with other parties likely to secure a limited number of seats.

These projections remain indicative, with final results to be confirmed as counting continues.
