'UNSC's inability to address ongoing conflicts highlights urgency of reform,' says EAM Jaishankar

New York: India reiterated on Wednesday that developing nations are bearing the brunt of global instabilities, stressing that the UN Security Council’s continued failure to resolve ongoing conflicts underscores the critical need for immediate structural reform.

Co-chairing the L.69 Consultative Ministerial Interaction alongside Saint Lucia Foreign Minister Alva Baptiste at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasised that the Global South is facing severe repercussions from current global geopolitical shifts while the United Nations falls short of expectations.

"The inability of UN Security Council to address ongoing conflicts & threats to international peace & security only highlight the urgency of reform," Jaishankar said in a post on X.

Indian officials noted that delaying long-overdue Security Council expansion further entrenches historical injustices against developing regions. The L.69 coalition brings together pro-reform member nations across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Pacific to advocate for meaningful transformation of the council.

"As directly impacted stakeholders, L.69 and C.10 members join forces to keep pushing for UNSC reform," Jaishankar said, referencing the Committee of Ten (C-10) established by the African Union.

Jaishankar, who arrived in New York on Sunday, is heading the Indian delegation for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. (PTI)
