Vijayawada: What began as a routine political visit by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy took a tragic turn in Sattenapalli. A 65-year-old YSRCP activist, Cheeli Singaiah, was tragically killed after being run over by former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s vehicle during a rally in Sattenapalli, Guntur district.

The incident occurred as Jagan’s convoy travelled to Rentapalla village to console the family of a deceased party worker. Despite police permission for only three vehicles and 100 people, a large crowd had gathered. Amid the chaos, Singaiah reportedly tried to shower Jagan’s vehicle with flowers but was pushed down by fellow supporters and accidentally crushed under the wheels of the lead vehicle.

Video footage later confirmed that the vehicle that ran over Singaiah was indeed the one carrying Jagan. Although onlookers shouted for help, the convoy did not stop and continued toward its destination.

A local ASI named Manohar noticed the incident and rushed Singaiah to hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

YSRCP leaders later visited the victim’s residence and quietly handed over a cheque of ₹10 lakh as ex gratia from the party. However, the incident has sparked political backlash.

TDPP leader Lavu Krishnadevarayalu stated, “Politics should never cost lives. Rallies and roadshows must be about hope, not tragedy. Let’s make safety, dignity, and humanity non-negotiable in public life.”

Former minister and YSRCP district president Ambati Rambabu described the death as “an unfortunate incident that took place during the rally.”

Police have initiated a formal investigation into the incident and the security arrangements that failed to prevent the tragedy.
