IRCTC upgrade: Aadhaar check-in users can book from 8 am–4 pm from Jan 5, all-day from Jan 12

New Delhi: Indian Railways has rolled out a significant update to its online reservation system, extending the train reservation time for Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users starting today, December 29.
The change, announced by the Railway Board, is part of ongoing efforts to curb misuse by touts and automated booking systems and to ensure more equitable access to reserved tickets for genuine passengers.
Under the revised rule, passengers who have completed Aadhaar authentication in their IRCTC account can book reserved general tickets online for a longer period on the first day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).
Previously, the requirement applied only to the initial morning hours when bookings opened. However, from today, this exclusive window runs from 8 am to 12 pm for Aadhaar-verified users. Railway officials said this step is being implemented in a phased manner.
Following the initial rollout today, the booking window will be further extended on January 5, 2026, allowing Aadhaar-authenticated users to book from 8 am to 4 pm. From January 12, 2026, the period will be extended to midnight (00:00 hours) on the reservation opening day.
This phased approach is intended to give passengers adequate time to adapt to the new system while reinforcing safeguards against automated ticket grabs.
In a letter dated December 18, 2025, addressed to all Principal Chief Commercial Managers (PCCMs), the Railway Board outlined that the expansion of Aadhaar-based booking hours aims to “ensure that benefits of the reservation system reach genuine passengers and are not misused by unscrupulous elements.”
The board also emphasized that ticket bookings through computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters remain unaffected.
Passengers planning to travel on popular routes are being advised to complete their Aadhaar authentication well in advance of the ARP opening date, as early booking slots are often filled within minutes due to high demand. The new timings are expected to significantly reduce the advantage currently held by automated agents and touts, particularly for high-traffic and festive travel periods.
Industry analysts say the move strengthens transparency in the reservation process and aligns with the government’s broader digital identity and passenger protection initiatives. However, passengers who have not linked their Aadhaar with IRCTC accounts may face constraints in accessing early booking windows and are encouraged to update their profiles promptly.
