Lokayan 26: INS Sudarshini's ambitious journey to foster international maritime ties

Kochi: The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini began its flagship voyage, Lokayan 26, from Naval Base Kochi, marking a 10-month transoceanic expedition across global waters.

Showcasing India’s rich maritime heritage and the vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family), the vessel will cover more than 22,000 nautical miles, calling at 18 foreign ports across 13 countries, the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

A major highlight of the deployment will be INS Sudarshini’s participation in leading international tall-ship events, Escale à Sète in France and SAIL 250 in New York, USA, where the ship will represent India’s proud seafaring legacy and maritime traditions on the global stage.

During the voyage, more than 200 Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard trainees will undergo intensive sail training, gaining hands-on experience in long-range ocean navigation, traditional seamanship and life aboard a tall ship.

The mission will also enable professional exchanges with trainees and naval personnel from other countries, fostering operational cooperation, maritime partnerships and enduring bonds of friendship.

INS Sudarshini will engage in joint training interactions and maritime cooperation activities with the navies of visiting nations, advancing India’s MAHASAGAR vision and strengthening regional and global maritime security.

The second sail training ship of the Indian Navy, INS Sudarshini, has already sailed over 140,000 nautical miles. Through Lokayan 26, the vessel continues to serve as a symbol of India’s maritime strength, professionalism and commitment to cultural diplomacy and international cooperation.
