India’s fastest night train? Vande Bharat sleeper hits 180 kmph; Ashwini Vaishnaw shares video
India’s next-generation Vande Bharat Sleeper train has successfully clocked 180 kmph during a crucial speed trial between the Kota–Nagda section, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push towards faster and more comfortable long-distance rail travel.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday shared a video of the high-speed test on social media, offering a glimpse from inside the train as the digital speedometer briefly touched 182 kmph.
The clip also showcased a unique “water test”, where glasses filled with water were stacked atop one another — remaining perfectly still even at peak speed, underlining the train’s superior stability and advanced engineering.
“Vande Bharat Sleeper tested today by Commissioner Railway Safety. It ran at 180 kmph between Kota–Nagda section. And our own water test demonstrated the technological features of this new generation train,” Vaishnaw wrote on X.

While existing Vande Bharat Express services operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, Indian Railways has clarified that the trains are designed for speeds up to 180 kmph, with actual operating speed depending on track geometry, stoppages, and maintenance conditions.
The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to transform overnight train journeys, especially for AC-class passengers. According to the Railway Ministry, the sleeper variant will combine high speed, modern amenities, and enhanced comfort, drastically reducing travel time on long-distance and high-demand routes.
In its year-end review, the ministry said the sleeper version would “truly redefine long-distance train travel,” initially on busy corridors and later across the rail network.
Indian Railways has been steadily expanding the Vande Bharat footprint. Earlier this month, an extended Vande Bharat Express service to Narasapur was launched from Chennai, improving connectivity with coastal Andhra Pradesh and reinforcing the government’s focus on semi-high-speed rail corridors.
