India's 1st Vande Bharat sleeper train set for launch in September 2025: Know key features, routes and more

Passengers will soon be able to experience overnight journeys aboard India’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed during a public event in Gujarat on August 3 that the eagerly awaited service is set to roll out in September 2025.

Designed to extend the success of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat fleet to long-distance routes, the new sleeper train promises a major leap in comfort, speed, and innovation. It will join the Indian Railways’ growing portfolio of modern services like Namo Bharat and Amrit Bharat, forming part of the Centre’s broader vision to transform railway travel across the country.

Built for the Future of Long-Distance Travel

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is being developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The 16-coach train will include AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier accommodations and is engineered to operate at speeds of up to 180 km/h.

Features to Enhance Comfort, Safety, and Accessibility

The sleeper variant will introduce a host of upgraded and entirely new passenger-friendly features, such as:

1. Real-time passenger information systems
2. USB-integrated reading lamps
3. CCTV surveillance across coaches
4. Modular pantry units
5. Hot-water showers in AC First Class
6. Accessible berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers
7. Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets
8. Talk-back units for in-coach communication
9. Sensor-based interconnecting doors

For enhanced safety, the train will be equipped with:

1. The Kavach anti-collision system
2. Emergency braking systems
3. Anti-climbing technology
4. Routes Still Under Finalisation

While the exact routes are yet to be confirmed, officials are considering several key long-distance corridors. Likely candidates include:

1. New Delhi–Howrah
2. New Delhi–Mumbai
3. New Delhi–Pune
4. New Delhi–Secunderabad

Affordable Luxury for the Middle Class

Minister Vaishnaw has reiterated that Vande Bharat services are intended to cater to middle-class families, and the sleeper train fares are expected to remain affordable, offering a viable and comfortable alternative to air travel.
