2 Amrit Bharat trains lead the charge: New high-speed connectivity for South India starts this March

Indian Railways is ushering in a new era of "affordable luxury" for long-distance commuters. Following a virtual launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Railway Ministry has confirmed that six new train services will begin regular operations this month, spearheaded by two game-changing Amrit Bharat Express trains.
Unlike premium AC-only trains, the Amrit Bharat Express is designed specifically for general and sleeper-class passengers, offering Vande Bharat-style speed and amenities at a fraction of the cost.
The highlights of this expansion are the two high-speed, non-AC Amrit Bharat trains that bridge the gap between South India and the rest of the country.

Full launch schedule for March 2026
Beyond the Amrit Bharat "monsters," four other crucial services are rolling out to boost regional trade and pilgrimage.
The Pollachi-Â- Palakkad MEMU train will also start its regular services from March 12 and operate five days a week.
The Mangaluru-Â- Rameswaram Express is a weekly train whose regular service will begin on March 14, departing from Mangaluru at 19:30.
The Mayiladuturai-Â- Karaikudi passenger train will operate daily from March 16.
Another express train, Tirunelveli-“Mangaluru Express, will begin its weekly services from March 18, departing from Tirunelveli at 15:45.
Talking about these new services, the ministry said that from linking Nagercoil at India's southern tip to the vibrant city of Charlapalli in Hyderabad, intertwining the industrial corridors of Coimbatore with the Steel City of Dhanbad to connecting the bustling southern city of Tirunelveli and sacred town Rameswaram to Mangaluru in the western coast, these services are redefining mobility.
"Furthermore, by offering people-centric regional connectivity through the Mayiladuthurai-”Thiruvarur-”Karaikkudi service, every infrastructure advancement ensures that every journey-- whether for a student, a trader, or a pilgrim, is safer, faster, and more affordable," the ministry said in a statement.
Why these trains matter: High-tech on a budget
The Railway Ministry emphasises that these aren't just "regular" trains. The Amrit Bharat rakes feature:
- Advanced "semi-permanent couplers" for a smoother ride.
- Mobile charging points at every seat, LED lighting, and CCTV security.
- Designed to run at speeds up to 130 km/h to slash travel times.
- Fixed, affordable fares that don't spike during festival seasons.
