Another ship hit in Iranian waters: 28 Indian crew safe as maritime worries grow

Tehran: All 28 Indian crew members aboard the Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker DISHA are safe after the vessel came under attack in Iranian territorial waters, the Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed on Friday. The embassy said it is coordinating with Iranian authorities and closely monitoring the situation.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran said the LPG tanker DISHA (IMO No. 8818219) was attacked earlier on Friday while operating in Iranian territorial waters.

The vessel was carrying 28 Indian nationals as crew members. Following the incident, the embassy contacted relevant authorities and confirmed that all Indian crew members were safe.

The embassy did not disclose details about the nature of the attack, the extent of damage to the vessel or who was responsible for the incident.

The Indian mission in Iran said it remains in touch with concerned authorities and is continuing to monitor developments.

The confirmation provided relief for the families of the 28 crew members, as commercial vessels operating in sensitive maritime regions have faced growing security risks due to regional conflicts and tensions.

Rising concerns over safety of Indian sailors

The incident comes days after another deadly attack involving a commercial vessel carrying Indian crew members.

Four Indian sailors were killed and another was critically injured after the cargo vessel MV Golden Leo came under attack shortly after leaving Ukraine’s Odesa port. The Ministry of External Affairs had confirmed that five Indian nationals were among the 17 crew members onboard.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of Indian seafarers working on international shipping routes passing through conflict-affected regions.

Commercial shipping routes in areas linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions have faced increased threats, affecting vessels carrying energy supplies, goods and essential commodities.

With thousands of Indian nationals employed in the global maritime sector, authorities have continued to monitor incidents involving Indian crew members and provide assistance during emergencies.
