What is Pantsir-S1? India’s new missile-gun system from Russia
India has signed a major defence deal with Russia for the procurement of variants of the Pantsir air defence missile-gun system, aimed at bolstering the country’s air defence capabilities. The agreement, signed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Rosoboronexport, will enhance India’s ability to protect critical military and industrial facilities from aerial threats.
Pantsir Missile System
The Pantsir system is a versatile and advanced air defence platform that integrates both missiles and guns to provide multi-layered protection against a wide range of aerial threats. The system is designed to defend key assets such as military bases, airports, and industrial sites, reinforcing India’s air defence units.
It combines two key components: surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) for medium-range defence and a 30mm autocannon for close-range interception. The system is known for its high mobility, mounted on a wheeled chassis, making it suitable for both static and mobile defence operations. The Pantsir’s radar suite includes both search and fire-control radars, allowing it to track and engage multiple targets simultaneously. The most common variant, the Pantsir-S1, can engage threats up to 40 km away and at altitudes as low as 5 meters. It is used primarily by Russia and has been exported to several countries, including Syria and the UAE.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BDL, India’s premier defence public sector undertaking (DPSU), and Russia’s state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport was signed on the sidelines of the 5th India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission Subgroup (IRIGC) in Goa. The MoU was signed by Cmde A. Madhavarao (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of BDL, and Mr. Kovalenko German, Deputy Director General of the Naval Department at Rosoboronexport.
The agreement was signed ahead of the visit by Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, who participated in the Russian-Indian Business Forum in Mumbai. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also attended the forum. On November 12, Manturov and Jaishankar will jointly preside over the 25th session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission, which focuses on trade, economic, scientific, and technical cooperation between the two nations.
BDL’s Role in India’s Defense Industry
Since its founding in 1970, BDL has collaborated with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to produce a range of missile systems and defence equipment for the Indian armed forces. Rosoboronexport, a key player in Russia’s defence industry, is responsible for the export and import of military technologies and services and plays a central role in Russia's military-technical cooperation with foreign nations.
The addition of the Pantsir system will further strengthen India’s air defence network, enhancing its ability to respond to emerging aerial threats in the region.
