New Delhi: India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighat, was commissioned into the Navy on Thursday in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The event was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who emphasized that the new submarine will significantly enhance the country's nuclear triad and deterrence capabilities.

The commissioning ceremony highlighted the technological advancements of INS Arighat, which, according to the defense ministry, surpasses its predecessor, INS Arihant, in sophistication. Singh expressed confidence that INS Arighat would strengthen India's nuclear triad, bolster nuclear deterrence, and contribute to regional strategic stability and national security.

Singh lauded the achievement as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to achieving 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defense. The commissioning of INS Arighat is seen as a significant boost to India's naval power and nuclear deterrence.

The INS Arihant, India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine, was launched in July 2009 and commissioned in 2016. The construction of INS Arighat involved advanced design and manufacturing technologies, extensive R&D, and skilled workmanship. The submarine features indigenous systems and equipment developed by Indian scientists, industry, and naval personnel.

The presence of both INS Arihant and INS Arighat enhances India's ability to deter potential threats and safeguard national interests. INS Arihant successfully conducted a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) test in October 2022 with high precision, underscoring the effectiveness of the SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear) program.

In his address, Singh praised the Indian Navy, DRDO, and the defense industry for their collaboration and efforts in realizing this capability. He highlighted that the project has significantly benefited the industrial sector, including MSMEs, and created numerous employment opportunities.

Recalling former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s vision that positioned India as a nuclear weapon state, Singh stated that the country is advancing towards becoming a developed nation. He underscored the need for rapid development in all fields, including defense, and reaffirmed the government's mission to equip soldiers with top-quality, domestically-made weapons and platforms. PTI
