Horror at AIADMK MLA’s estate: TN cop hacked to death by drunken father-son duo in Tiruppur

Chennai: In a gruesome crime that has sent shockwaves through Tamil Nadu’s police force and political corridors, a Special Sub-Inspector (SI) was brutally hacked to death by a father-son duo late Tuesday night at a private estate belonging to AIADMK MLA C. Mahendran in Tiruppur district.
The slain officer, identified as Shanmughavel, was posted at Kudimangalam Police Station near Udumalpet. He had responded to a call about a violent altercation between the two men—workers employed at the legislator's estate in Madathukulam constituency—when he was ambushed and killed.
According to preliminary police findings, the father and son were allegedly intoxicated and had engaged in a heated quarrel on the estate grounds. After neighbours alerted authorities, SI Shanmughavel was dispatched alone to the location to investigate the disturbance. What followed was a deadly escalation.
During the inquiry, an argument reportedly broke out between the officer and the duo. In a sudden and brutal assault, the men attacked Shanmughavel with sickles, inflicting multiple fatal wounds. He died on the spot. The assailants then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of bloodshed and panic.
Local residents who heard the commotion called the police. A team of officers arrived shortly after, recovered the body, and sent it to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem.
Senior officers, including top district police officials, visited the crime scene early Wednesday morning and ordered an immediate, high-priority investigation. A manhunt is currently underway to trace the absconding suspects, with multiple teams combing the surrounding areas and known hideouts.
Police sources told IANS that both accused have a history of disorderly conduct and are suspected to be habitual offenders. Investigators believe a mix of alcohol, rage, and fear of legal repercussions may have triggered the attack.
The fact that the killing occurred on the property of a sitting AIADMK legislator has drawn sharp public and political attention. While MLA Mahendran has not been linked to the incident beyond estate ownership, the crime has reignited concerns over law and order, especially the safety of officers conducting solo field inquiries in remote areas.
The Tamil Nadu Police Department has condemned the killing and promised swift justice. Political leaders across party lines have expressed shock and grief, calling the attack an assault on the rule of law itself.
Authorities are also reviewing safety protocols for police personnel on field duty, especially in volatile or alcohol-influenced environments.
As the hunt continues, the state mourns the loss of yet another officer in the line of duty — a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement faces every day.
