The recently released Hema Committee report  shed light on the handling of intimate scenes in the Malayalam film industry. It revealed a mix of positive practices and serious concerns.

Positive developments

On the positive side, the report commends several individuals for their respectful approach to intimate scenes. Notably, a cinematographer and a director are recognised for their considerate management, ensuring a comfortable and private environment for actors. Their practices, including limiting the presence of non-essential personnel and maintaining privacy, are seen as steps towards fostering a safer and more supportive on-set atmosphere.

Areas of concern

However, the report also exposes troubling issues related to harassment and exploitation. It reveals a disturbing trend where some industry figures mistakenly assume that women who consent to intimate scenes on-screen are also open to unwanted sexual advances off-screen. This misconception has led to instances of inappropriate demands and exploitation, particularly affecting newcomers who may be coerced into uncomfortable situations.

One specific case detailed in the report involves a witness who was misled about the nature of intimate scenes in a film. Despite initial assurances from the director, the witness was pressured into performing scenes involving nudity and kissing. The lack of transparency and inadequate contractual protection in this instance highlight the need for clearer agreements and better safeguarding measures.

Recommended measures

In response to these issues, the committee recommends that directors fully disclose the nature of intimate scenes to actors before finalising contracts. This information should be explicitly included in contracts to ensure transparency and prevent unexpected demands or exploitation.

Role of intimacy coordinators

It is worth noting that the call for a committee by the Kerala government to address issues in the Malayalam film industry followed the global #MeToo movement. This movement, which heightened awareness of sexual harassment, has led to the introduction of intimacy coordinators/directors globally. These professionals, already established in Hollywood, are beginning to gain traction in India. Their role includes safeguarding actors' boundaries, preventing unforeseen delays or legal issues, and supporting both the director's vision and the actors' comfort.

Intimacy coordinators are tasked with ensuring that scenes involving nudity, simulated sex, and other forms of intimate contact are handled with sensitivity and respect. They work closely with various departments to create a comfortable environment and ensure that the portrayal of intimacy is authentic and in line with the story's needs.

The findings of the Hema Committee underscore the importance of adopting best practices and fostering a respectful and safe working environment for all involved. It is anticipated that intimacy coordinators will soon become a standard part of Malayalam film productions.
