Hands up for justice: Delhi Court delivers rare contempt punishment

New Delhi: In an unprecedented move, the Delhi court delivered a surprising punishment for what it deemed "contempt of court." Judicial Magistrate Saurabh Goyal, on July 15, ordered four individuals, Kuldeep, Rakesh, Upasana, and Anand, to stand in the courtroom with their hands raised in the air for the entire day.

The magistrate's decision came after the accused failed to furnish bail bonds despite being called twice between 10 AM and 11:40 AM in a 2018 complaint case. The court deemed this a waste of its time and a direct defiance of a previous order.

"For wasting the time of the court, which is in contempt of the order duly promulgated on the last date of hearing, the accused persons are hereby held guilty for contempt of court proceedings and are convicted for the offence under Section 228 (intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding) of the IPC," the order stated.

The matter is now scheduled for further proceedings on August 11. Two other accused in the case have reportedly passed away.
