Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: Banks to remain closed on November 5 in several states; Full list here

Kozhikode: Banks across several states will remain closed on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav.

The festival marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

Bank Holiday on November 5

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s holiday calendar, many states have declared a public holiday for banks on this day.

The holiday will be observed in Mizoram, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Srinagar, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

The day also coincides with Kartika Purnima and Rahas Purnima, adding to the festive spirit in many parts of the country. However, bank customers are advised to check the local holiday list issued by the regional RBI office or visit their bank’s website, as holidays can vary from state to state.

In addition to Guru Nanak Jayanti, banks will also remain closed on all Sundays and on the second (November 8) and fourth Saturdays (November 22) of the month.

Even though physical branches will not operate, customers can still perform financial transactions through digital banking platforms, ATMs, mobile apps, and internet banking.

Guru Nanak Jayanti, one of the most significant Sikh festivals, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born in 1469 in Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.

Revered as a spiritual teacher, philosopher, and social reformer, Guru Nanak’s teachings emphasised equality, compassion, humility, and service to humanity.

On this day, devotees participate in Prabhat Pheris (early morning processions), offer prayers at Gurdwaras, and listen to Kirtans and discourses from the Guru Granth Sahib.
