Unidentified gunmen ambush Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur; two jawans killed, five injured

Imphal: Two Assam Rifles personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a jawan, were killed in a terrorist attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, officials said.

Two other jawans sustained injuries in the assault.

The attackers, who opened fire on a vehicle carrying the troops along a busy road, fled the scene in a white van. Officials noted that the soldiers exercised restraint while retaliating in order to prevent civilian casualties.

The attack occurred around 6 p.m. in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area of the district.According to officials, a vehicle-based column of troops from 33 Assam Rifles was moving from its Patsoi Company Operating Base to the Nambol Company Operating Base when ambushed by unidentified terrorists.

“In the ensuing action, two personnel of Assam Rifles were martyred, and five were injured, who have since been evacuated to RIMS and are currently stable. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility. Search operations are ongoing to apprehend the terrorists involved in the incident,” said Defence PRO, Guwahati.
