Goa nightclub fire: Luthra brothers placed in police custody for five days

Mapusa (Goa): In a major development in the Arpora nightclub fire case, the Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Wednesday placed nightclub owners Gaurav Luthra and Saurabh Luthra in five days of police custody.

The Luthra brothers, owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa’s Arpora, were produced before the court after undergoing a mandatory medical examination at Anjuna District Hospital, officials said. The medical check-up was conducted as part of standard procedure following their arrival in the state.

Goa Police arrested the accused after they were deported from Thailand and brought to India. The duo was initially brought to Goa from New Delhi after a court granted a 48-hour transit remand in connection with the case.

The arrests are linked to the December 6 fire tragedy at the Arpora nightclub, which claimed 25 lives. Police have registered criminal cases against the club owners, alleging gross negligence and violation of mandatory safety norms.

Following the medical examination, the accused were produced before the JMFC court, where the police sought further custodial interrogation to probe lapses in safety compliance and responsibility for the deadly incident.
