Goa: A massive fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, on Saturday night, killing 25 people, including tourists and staff. While early reports suggested a cylinder may have caused the blaze, video footage shared on social media shows the fire erupting from the roof of the dance performance area moments before the incident became widely known.

The footage captures flames igniting near the lighting system while the performer was still on stage. Guests are seen scrambling in panic as smoke and fire spread rapidly across the venue. Authorities said the chaotic scenes contributed to casualties, as some attendees were unable to evacuate in time.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that six injured people are receiving medical care at Goa Medical College, while compensation is being arranged for the families of the deceased. CM Sawant said: “This is an unfortunate day. For the first time in Goa’s tourism history, such a large fire incident has occurred… Fire was doused within half an hour, but some could not escape in time.”

Investigators are now examining the nightclub’s lighting and electrical systems, alongside compliance with fire safety norms, to determine the exact cause. Managers and staff have already been arrested, and an arrest warrant has been issued against the club owners.

Helplines have been activated for families, tourists, and residents seeking assistance:

  • North Goa District Control Room: 0832-2225383
  • Goa Police Control Room (North Goa): 7875756000

Officials at district and sub-divisional levels are coordinating rescue and inquiry operations to ensure accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
