Garuda Aerospace opens Defence Drone facility in Chennai

Chennai: Chennai-based drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace has opened a new defence drone facility at Thalambur, near Chennai, marking a major step in strengthening India’s indigenous drone technology. The facility was inaugurated on Friday by Sanjay Seth, Union Minister of State for Defence.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said, “Today marks a historic step in India’s journey towards Atmanirbhar in defence and technology with the inauguration of Garuda Aerospace’s world-class drone facility in Chennai. This hub is not just manufacturing advanced UAV systems, it represents a complete ecosystem of design, Research and Development, incubation, certification and production.”

During the ceremony, the Minister unveiled five advanced UAV systems developed by the company. These include the Avalanche Victim Drone, Swarm Drone, Jawan Drone and Canister Dropping Drone.

The company also announced the creation of a Defence Drone Lab in partnership with the 13 JAK Rifles (Ladakh and Gwalior). In addition, Garuda Aerospace introduced a Free Remote Pilot Certification (RPC) programme for Indian defence personnel. The first batch of Jawans received their certifications during the inauguration.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Seth noted, “The synergy between Agni College of Technology and Garuda Aerospace highlights how technical education, research and industrial capability can align with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat to build niche technologies, ensure quality standards and create global leadership in drones.”

He also assured government support, saying, “The Ministry of Defence is committed to supporting such initiatives that safeguard our skies, empower the armed forces, and advance India’s position as a future global drone hub.”

Garuda Aerospace further announced plans for a Defence Park in Cheyyur, Chengalpattu district, spread over 76 acres. This upcoming facility is envisioned as a hub for drone research and innovation.

Sharing his vision, Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, said, “At Garuda Aerospace, our mission is to make India self-reliant in defence drone technology. By 2027, we aim to ensure that India is not only prepared for the future of drone warfare but is also setting global benchmarks in innovation and reliability.”

As part of the event, the Minister also released the company’s ‘Garuda Raksha Udaan 2025 Impact Book’, which highlights Garuda Aerospace’s journey, achievements, and contributions to India’s growing drone ecosystem.
