Two dead, five injured in Uttar Pradesh coaching centre explosion

Farrukhabad: At least two people were killed and five others injured in an explosion at a coaching centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the blast is believed to have been caused by an accumulation of concentrated methane gas in a septic tank located in the building’s basement.

“We received information around 3:19 pm from the Kadri Gate Police Station area. The field unit and fire services are currently working at the site. Prima facie, it seems to be a coaching institute with a septic tank in the basement. The blast occurred due to excess concentrated methane there. A switchboard was also found nearby — perhaps the blast occurred due to that. The injured are under treatment. Investigation is being done,” Farrukhabad Superintendent of Police Arti Singh told reporters.

Farrukhabad District Magistrate Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi confirmed the casualties and said a formal probe is underway.

“An explosion took place in the septic tank of a coaching centre. Prima facie, the explosion is being attributed to the non-exhaustion of concentrated methane gas. Two people have died. Five people are undergoing treatment. A committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the City Magistrate to investigate the cause of the incident,” he told ANI.
