Thrissur: The ‘Clean Toilet Picture Challenge’ launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has received an encouraging response from travellers across the country. The initiative invites commuters to photograph unhygienic conditions in toilets located at national highway toll plazas that have been constructed or are operated under the authority’s supervision, and submit them for scrutiny.

Images must be uploaded through the RajmargYatra app. After verifying the authenticity of the geo-tagged photographs, participants are awarded ₹1,000. The reward amount is credited directly to the FASTag account linked to their vehicles. Of the 350 travellers who have already submitted photographs, 265 have received the incentive. The verification process also makes use of AI-enabled tools.

The primary objective of the initiative is to ensure that all highway users have access to clean and well-maintained toilet facilities. It also aims to encourage public participation in safeguarding and monitoring civic amenities.

The photo challenge forms part of the Central government’s Special Campaign 5.0 and will continue until 30 June.
